Review of the Professional Standards for Lecturers in Scotland’s Colleges: Gathering the Student Voice

A review of the existing standards for lecturers in Scotland’s colleges is currently being conducted by the College Development Network (CDN) on behalf of the Scottish Government. sparqs has been tasked with ensuring that students have the opportunity to be directly involved in shaping this key review which will result in a revised set of Standards for the profession.

As advertised in one of our previous news articles, in February and March 2018, we facilitated two workshops which brought students together in order to gather their thoughts and opinions. Held in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, the events were attended by a total of 19 delegates – comprising a good mix of student officers, course reps and students – representing nine of Scotland’s colleges. The attendees were all very engaged and enthusiastic, and articulated clearly the skills, values and practices that they most value in their teaching staff and which they want to see reflected in the revised standards.

sparqs is now analysing all the information generated during the events to identify key themes. This will be fed back to CDN where, in conjunction with the research being conducted with other key stakeholder groups, it will form part of the evidence-base underpinning the revised standards.

The revised standards will be launched at CDN’s College Expo18 event taking place on 6th and 7th June 2018 at Queen Margaret University.  The event is free to attend for everyone involved in post-16 education and training – book your free place online here.
