Our guide to developing an education officer induction in colleges has been updated for the 2020-21 year and aims to provide support for the effective engagement of the students’ association education officer, Vice-President (Education) or equivalent.
It is specific to colleges, reflecting characteristics such as the short student lifecycle prior to standing for election, recent changes in governance and quality assurance, and of course the impact of remote working as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The resource is in response to demand from colleges and students’ associations, though it may prove helpful reading in a university context too.
Content includes guidance on co-designing an effective induction, identifying the areas of work of an education officer, and thinking through the cultures and practices that can enable a mutually beneficial partnership between education officers and those they work with. There are also appendices with a framework for an education officer role profile and a template for an induction calendar, plus links to key reading in relevant college sector policy.
The resource is aimed at those who support and work with incoming education officers, such as staff in management and quality, secretaries to the board of management, students’ association staff, and outgoing education officers. sparqs would be happy to provide support to this group in using the resource to develop an induction plan or reflect on existing practices.
Produced for the first time in spring 2020, the resource has been updated to reflect the context of the 2021-22 academic year, and will continue to be updated on an annual basis.
