Celebrating 20 years of Scotland’s enhancement-led approach to quality

The 2022-23 academic year is an important milestone for the Scottish higher education sector as it marks 20 years of the national enhancement-led approach to quality.

To celebrate this milestone, QAA Scotland is, on behalf of the sector, hosting an exciting 20 Years of Enhancement campaign, which will draw on sector colleagues’ and students’ experience of the enhancement-led approach, create opportunities for critical reflection, consider lessons learned, and look to the future of enhancement in Scotland.

Over the course of the year, QAA Scotland’s programme will include online panel discussions with sector leaders, refreshed Enhancement Themes resources which have been updated to reflect recent developments in practice, and reflective blogs covering topics such as the national Enhancement Themes, student engagement in enhancement and more.

Read the blogs

The 20 Years programme recently kicked off with the publication of a new blog from Dr Ailsa Crum, Director of Membership, Quality Enhancement and Standards at QAA, reflecting on 20 years of the enhancement-led approach to quality in Scotland. Dr Crum played a key role in the conception and successful implementation of the national enhancement-led approach to quality and continues to champion the value of enhancement in her role at QAA. Her unique perspective provides an excellent introduction to Scotland’s enhancement-led approach to quality and its continued value in a tertiary education sector. We are delighted that the next blog, which will be published as part of the programme during November, will be written by our Director, Eve Lewis, around student engagement in enhancement.

Join the first virtual panel!

The first virtual panel of the programme takes place on 14th November 2022, around ‘Valuing student representation in quality enhancement’. It is now open to book and again, sparqs is delighted to be involved, with Eve chairing the panel. It will bring together past sabbatical officers and former ELIR student reviewers to discuss the impact of student representation in quality enhancement and how they have used lessons from their student representative experience to inform their current roles within the Scottish and international higher education sectors. QAA is keen to get as many students as possible involved …..students’ associations please flag this opportunity to your students!

QAA Scotland's 5th International Enhancement Conference

Further virtual panels, blogs and much more is planned for 2023, before the programme culminates on 14th-15th June 2023 with QAA Scotland’s 5th International Enhancement Conference, ‘Shaping the Student Experience Together: 20 Years of Enhancement’. The conference is taking place at Glasgow Caledonian University and the call for proposals for the conference is now open (closing date 18th November 2022).
