New resources for inducting education officers

The changes in the learning experience, the homeworking context, and the challenges lying ahead in the new academic year, all mean that incoming education sabbaticals in students’ associations have a difficult but vital job. sparqs has produced two resources that will be of value to the sector in ensuring these officers have the best possible start to their terms of office.

As part of our continuing series of COVID-19 briefings, we have produced a short induction resource for universities and colleges outlining ideas and suggestions for developing a successful induction for education officers, usually called Vice President (Education) or similar, that reflects the changed personal and organisational contexts in which new officers will find themselves.

The second new resource is a general induction guide for colleges, developed in response to sector demand and reflecting the particular challenges that education officers face within college students’ associations. Its emphasis is on a partnership approach among the different staff who will work with and induct the new education officer, including quality, management and students’ association roles, and reflection on the needs and intended impact of new officers.

Both resources should complement existing induction activities undertaken for wider executive teams.

sparqs can work with institutions and students’ associations to use this resource to develop or add to an effective induction programme.
