Enhancing your own practice:
Engaging with the literature
- Who is this activity designed for? Any staff member who wants/needs to engage with the literature around Student Partnership. This will be particularly relevant for participants of taught programmes such as Professional Development Awards (PDA), Teaching Qualifications in Further Education (TQFE) and Postgraduate Certificates in Academic Practice (PGCAP) or equivalent.
- How do I engage with this activity? We recommend that you individually work through the resources shown on this page. You can engage with them on an asynchronous (on demand) basis by clicking the relevant hyperlinks below. We then suggest convening for a group discussion with your peers to compare your individual reflections on the literature that you’ve engaged with.
- How long will it take? It should take approximately 1 hour to individually work through this activity.

a) Guide: Students as Partners
This resource is one of the ‘Engaged Learning concise guides’ from colleagues in the Centre for Engaged Learning at Elon University. It’s a useful starting point for gaining an overview of key issues and a summary of relevant literature associated with Student Partnership, and it also signposts colleagues to key scholarship for further reading.
b) Publication: A co-creation of learning and teaching typology: What kind of co-creation are you planning or doing?
This publication by Prof. Cathy Bovill (The University of Edinburgh), is “a co-creation of learning and teaching typology, which is a practical resource intended to support students and staff to reflect on, and discuss, their planned and current practice and to be able to identify what particular kind of co-creation they are planning or doing.” We recommend working through the resource and writing down your reflections in response to the questions that it poses.
c) Bibliography: Students as Partners and Change Agents
This resource from Prof Mick Healey provides a selected Bibliography for ‘Students as Partners and Change Agents’. This offers an extensive list of literature that colleagues can scan, prioritise and then explore at a later time. Scroll down the page to find the relevant weblink.
